About the HazMat Test in Kentucky
The HazMat endorsement test is required in Kentucky for drivers who transport hazardous materials. It covers placarding, labeling, loading procedures, emergency response, and compliance with federal hazmat regulations. A TSA background check is also required.
The HazMat test is part of the CDL written exam administered by the Kentucky Department of Motor Vehicles. You must pass this test along with the other required written tests to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) in Kentucky.
Our practice questions are built from the official Kentucky CDL handbook and federal FMCSA regulations. Each question includes a detailed explanation to help you understand the material, not just memorize answers.

How to add the HazMat endorsement in Kentucky
- Get a Commercial Learner’s Permit first if you do not already hold a Kentucky CDL — the endorsement can only be added to a Kentucky CDL or CDL permit. Source
- Call the Kentucky State Police on 1 (888) 655-9655 to book fingerprinting, and bring your CLP or licence plus one more form of ID. Source
- Pay the $138.25 fingerprint-based criminal background check fee by certified cheque, cashier’s cheque or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer, or by card on the KSP site before the appointment. This is not the endorsement fee. Source
- Wait for the TSA determination — TSA notifies KYTC of approval or disqualification and the result is posted to your Kentucky driving record. A TWIC card can be submitted instead as proof of the threat assessment. Source
- Complete the hazardous-materials ELDT course, then take the 30-question hazmat written test with KSP and pay the $5.00 hazmat fee. There is no oral version of the hazmat test. Source

Kentucky CDL questions
- How many questions are on the Kentucky CDL tests, and what score do you need?
- Kentucky publishes the counts in its CDL manual: general knowledge 50 questions, combination vehicles 20 (Class A), air brakes 25, and for endorsements — doubles/triples 20, tankers 20, passenger transport 20, school bus 20 and hazardous materials 30. Every test needs 80 percent correct. The general knowledge test can be retaken indefinitely with no retest fee; combination, air-brake and endorsement retakes cost $5 each. Source
- Who gives the CDL test in Kentucky?
- The Kentucky State Police — KSP is exclusively responsible for every CDL knowledge, vision and skills test, while the Transportation Cabinet handles the paperwork and issues the credential. That means two stops on test day: the Driver Licensing Regional Office for self-certification, fees and the NCIC check, then KSP for the tests, then back to the Regional Office for the card. Book the skills test on 800-542-5990 (press 1); hazmat written tests and fingerprinting appointments go through KSP too. You supply the test vehicle and bring a licensed driver qualified for it. Source
- What does Kentucky require for a hazmat (H) endorsement?
- You need a Kentucky CDL or CDL permit first, then a fingerprint-based criminal background check with the Kentucky State Police (book on 1 (888) 655-9655) costing $138.25 — that is the background check, not the endorsement. After TSA approval you complete hazmat ELDT and take the 30-question written test with KSP for a $5.00 fee; there is no oral version. The threat assessment repeats every five years with a 60-day notice, and the hazmat test is retaken at every CDL renewal unless it has been under two years. A valid TWIC card can stand in for the assessment. Source
