What is the CDL Exam?
The Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam is a standardized test required by every U.S. state for anyone who wants to operate commercial motor vehicles. The exam has two main parts: written knowledge tests and a skills (driving) test.
The written portion consists of a General Knowledge test (required for all CDL applicants) plus additional tests depending on the vehicle type and endorsements you need. You must pass all required written tests to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), which allows you to practice driving with a licensed CDL holder before taking the skills test.
Each state administers the exam through its DMV or equivalent agency. While the core content is based on federal FMCSA regulations, states may have slight variations in the number of questions, passing scores, and fees.

New English Language Proficiency Enforcement — We've Got You Covered
In 2025, federal authorities began strictly enforcing English language proficiency requirements under 49 CFR §391.11. Drivers who cannot demonstrate sufficient English comprehension during roadside inspections are being placed out of service — hundreds have already been affected.
Since 2022, CDL Help has been helping drivers who are committed to doing things the right way — giving motivated drivers the tools to genuinely learn the material and earn their license through real understanding. Long before the enforcement wave, we built a dedicated English language practice feature directly into our app, because we knew that true road safety starts with comprehension — understanding highway signs, responding to inspectors, and communicating clearly on the job.

Your Path to a Commercial Driver's License
To get a CDL, you must first study for and pass the permit exam at the DMV. After you receive your permit, you can take commercial vehicle driving classes and complete the required training. The final step is passing the official driving exam to earn your CDL. Our practice tests help you prepare for the DMV permit exam with real-style questions, and we also provide extra study materials and helpful resources to guide you through the process.
