Frequently Asked Questions
Theoretical Tests (CDL Permit)
In which states can I take exams in Russian?
Russian language exams are available in states like California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Oregon, New York, New Jersey, and Florida. The availability of languages depends on the specific DMV location.
How many questions are on the exam?
General Knowledge: 50 questions Air Brakes: 25 questions Combination Vehicles: 20 questions
How many mistakes can I make?
General Knowledge: Up to 10 errors allowed Air Brakes: Up to 5 errors allowed Combination Vehicles: Up to 4 errors allowed You need to answer 80% of questions correctly to pass.
How many times can I retake the theoretical exam?
Most states do not have strict limits on retakes. Some states have waiting periods (for example, Illinois requires a 30-day wait after 3 failed attempts). Check with your local DMV for specific rules.
Can I take theoretical exams outside my license state?
No, the driver's permit exams can only be taken in the state where you have permanent registration.
Can I take the exam without knowing English?
It depends on the state. Many states offer the written knowledge (theory) test in languages other than English — Spanish is the most common, and some states offer additional languages — but this varies by state, and several states have recently moved to English-only testing. The skills (driving) test is always conducted in English. Just as important: federal rules now require English-language proficiency to operate a commercial vehicle, and since June 2025 drivers can be placed out of service for failing a roadside English check. So you may be able to study and test in your language where it's offered, but you'll need working English to earn and keep your CDL — that's why CDL Help lets you practice in your language while building the English you need.
