Emergency Vehicle Warning Sign
The emergency vehicle warning sign is a diamond-shaped yellow warning sign that alerts drivers to an area where emergency vehicles frequently enter the roadway, such as near hospitals, fire stations, ambulance stations, or emergency vehicle access points. The sign may feature a symbol of an emergency vehicle or text such as "EMERGENCY VEHICLES" or "AMBULANCE ENTRANCE." When you see this sign, be prepared for emergency vehicles — ambulances, fire trucks, police cars — to enter the road with lights and sirens, often in a hurry. All states require drivers to yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles operating with lights and sirens. This means you must pull over to the right side of the road and stop until the emergency vehicle passes. Do not block intersections, and never follow within a certain distance (typically 500 feet) of an emergency vehicle responding to a call. Additionally, most states have "move over" laws requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down significantly when approaching stopped emergency vehicles on the side of the road. These laws were enacted after multiple emergency responders were struck and killed by passing vehicles.
