Every CDL Help practice question is written from the official state CDL manuals and the federal regulations behind them — primarily 49 CFR Part 383, the FMCSA rule that defines the CDL knowledge tests. The actual state exam banks are confidential, and we do not claim to reproduce them: our questions cover the material the official manuals say the exams test, in the same multiple-choice format.
Our question bank currently holds 2,500+ practice questions across general knowledge and the endorsement tests (air brakes, combination vehicles, hazardous materials, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger). English is the source text; every question is also available in the nine other languages the site and app support.
Test length and passing rules follow the AAMVA test model that most states base their exams on: 50 questions for general knowledge, 25 for air brakes, 30 for hazmat, and 20 for combination, tanker, passenger, and doubles/triples. Federal rule sets the passing score at 80% for every CDL knowledge test (49 CFR 383.135).
States can and do deviate from the model — some add their own material (Texas, for example, adds a state-specific "Special Requirements" section). Where we state question counts we attribute them to the AAMVA standard rather than promising them for your state, and our state pages tell you to check your state's own CDL manual for local differences.
Facts that vary by state — licensing fees, agency names, application steps — are sourced per state from that state's licensing-agency website, shown with citations on our state practice-test pages, and re-verified in review waves. The most recent full review of the state practice-test pages was completed on August 17, 2026.
We update questions in two ways:
No practice test can guarantee an official exam result, and practice scores are not predictions. CDL Help is an independent study resource — we are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any state licensing agency or DMV, the FMCSA, or AAMVA.
