About the HazMat Test in Illinois
The HazMat endorsement test is required in Illinois for drivers who transport hazardous materials. It covers placarding, labeling, loading procedures, emergency response, and compliance with federal hazmat regulations. A TSA background check is also required.

How to add the HazMat endorsement in Illinois
- Start with TSA, not the test: Illinois requires a TSA security threat assessment on file before you may take the written H or X endorsement test — and again at every CDL renewal that keeps the endorsement. Source
- Complete the TSA pre-enrolment application online or by calling the TSA Call Center on 855-347-8371. Source
- Book and attend an in-person fingerprint appointment, bringing identity and citizenship/immigration documents and payment (by money order if you did not pay online). Source
- Complete Entry-Level Driver Training for the H endorsement before you take the hazardous materials written test. Source
- Once TSA clears you, the Secretary of State notifies you to visit a CDL facility for the hazardous materials written test and issuance — no CDL with an H or X endorsement can be issued or renewed before that approval. Source

- How many questions is the Illinois CDL knowledge test and what score do I need?
- The computerized General (Core) Knowledge test is 30 randomly drawn multiple-choice questions. You need at least 80% on each applicable test — except the school bus test, which needs 90%. Tests are given in English only, though you may ask for an audio format in which the computer reads the test aloud. A passed knowledge test stays good for a maximum of one year. Source
- What happens if I fail an Illinois CDL test?
- Illinois runs a three-strike ladder: fail the same exam three times and you wait 30 days, three more failures (six total) means 90 days, and three more after that (nine total) means a year from the last failure. The wait applies only to the exam you failed three times, and a fee is charged again for each new round of testing. Source
- What does Illinois require for a hazmat (H) endorsement?
- TSA clearance first: a security threat assessment must be on file before you may take the hazardous materials written test, and Illinois will not issue or renew a CDL carrying H or X until TSA approves. You must also finish Entry-Level Driver Training before the hazmat test. Both the assessment and the written test are required again at every renewal — start 60 days before your CDL expires.
