About the HazMat Test in California

The HazMat endorsement test is required in California for drivers who transport hazardous materials. It covers placarding, labeling, loading procedures, emergency response, and compliance with federal hazmat regulations. A TSA background check is also required.

The HazMat test is part of the CDL written exam administered by the California Department of Motor Vehicles. You must pass this test along with the other required written tests to receive your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) in California.

Our practice questions are built from the official California CDL handbook and federal FMCSA regulations. Each question includes a detailed explanation to help you understand the material, not just memorize answers.

How to add the HazMat endorsement in California

  5. TSA notifies DMV of the result; DMV mails a new CDL with the HazMat endorsement once all applicable tests are complete. Source
  6. To keep the endorsement, begin the TSA renewal at least 30 days before it expires; DMV mails a reminder about 90 days ahead. Source

As of September 2, 2026, verified against California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

California CDL questions

How many times can I take the California CDL knowledge test?
Three attempts per test on one application. Fail the same test three times and the application is no longer valid — you have to reapply. DMV does not administer knowledge tests within 30 minutes of closing, so arrive early. Source
Can I take the California CDL knowledge test in Russian or Spanish?
Yes. The California Commercial Driver Handbook states the commercial knowledge tests are available in English, Arabic, Chinese, Punjabi, Russian and Spanish, taken on DMV’s automated testing equipment. The skills test, however, must be conducted in English and interpreters are prohibited. Source
When do I start the TSA background check for a California HazMat endorsement?
After you apply for your CDL and pass all required knowledge tests. DMV first issues a CLP or temporary license marked “Not valid for carrying hazardous materials”; you then pre-enroll with TSA online or by phone (1-855-347-8371), visit a Universal Enrollment Services center for fingerprints and the federal fee, and DMV mails a new CDL with the H endorsement once TSA clears you and all tests are complete. Source
What does the HazMat endorsement cost in California?
DMV charges $59 to add the hazmat endorsement to a Class A, B or C CDL. TSA’s security threat assessment is a separate federal fee paid to TSA, not to DMV — see the facts table for the current amount. Source
