Cab in the simulator

Every part of the Cab zone, in the order of the inspection, with what to check and what to say to the examiner in English and in your language. Tap a part to see it on the truck.

Parts in this zone

  1. 1

    Ignition switch / key

What to check: Key to on (battery charge) for electrical checks; start engine for gauge and air build-up checks; engine off for the leak and warning-device tests.

  2. 2

Clutch pedal and gearshift (safe start)

What to check: Depress the clutch, place the gearshift in neutral (or park), start the engine with the parking brake set, then release the clutch slowly.

  3. 3

    Seat belt

What to check: Securely mounted, adjusts, latches properly, not ripped or frayed.

  4. 4

    Dashboard indicator lights

What to check: Show that the left turn, right turn, four-way flasher, high-beam, ABS (and DEF, if equipped) indicators light when the corresponding control is used; the ABS light comes on then goes off at start.

  5. 5

    Oil pressure gauge

What to check: Gauge works and shows increasing or normal oil pressure after start (or the warning light goes off).

  6. 6

    Coolant temperature gauge

What to check: Gauge works and temperature begins to climb to the normal operating range (or the temperature light is off).

  7. 7

    Ammeter / voltmeter

What to check: Gauge shows the alternator is charging (or the warning light is off).

  8. 8

    Air pressure gauges (primary/secondary)

What to check: Gauges are working; air builds to governor cut-out at approximately 120-140 psi (or manufacturer spec); the 2005-system NY text says 100-125 psi.

  9. 9

    Windshield

What to check: Clean, no obstructions or illegal stickers (inspection sticker allowed), no cracks or damage to the glass.

  10. 10

    Mirrors (adjusted from inside)

What to check: Mirrors clean and properly adjusted from the driver's seat; cameras/monitors (if equipped) clean and the display operable.

  11. 11

    Wiper arms and blades

What to check: Arms and blades secure and not damaged; turn the wipers on to show they operate smoothly, then off.

  12. 12

    Windshield washers

What to check: Activate the washers to show they spray and work correctly; washer fluid present.

  13. 13

    Heater / defroster controls

What to check: Identify, describe and demonstrate that the heater and defroster work by operating the controls (fan and defrost setting).

  14. 14

    Electric horn (steering wheel)

What to check: Press to show the electric horn works.

  15. 15

    Air horn (lanyard/button)

What to check: Pull the lanyard or press the button to show the air horn works (check both horns if equipped).

  16. 16

    Steering wheel (free play)

What to check: With the engine running (power steering), turn the wheel back and forth: play should not exceed 10 degrees (about 2 inches on a 20-inch wheel) before the front left wheel barely moves.

  17. 17

Parking brake control (yellow diamond knob)

What to check: Pull out to set the tractor spring brakes, push in to release; used in the parking brake check, the leak test and the pop-out test.

  18. 18

Trailer air supply / tractor protection control (red octagon knob)

What to check: Pull out to apply the trailer spring (parking) brakes, push in to charge the trailer; must pop out (close) between 20 and 45 psi at the same time as or before the yellow valve.

  19. 19

    Trailer hand (trolley) valve

What to check: Applies trailer service brakes only; some schools use it for the trailer tug test, but the manual's trailer brake check uses the trailer parking brake (red valve).

  20. 20

    Service brake pedal

What to check: Fully apply and hold for the one-minute applied leak test; pump (fan) to drop pressure for the warning and pop-out tests; apply at 5 mph for the service brake check.

  21. 21

Low air pressure warning (buzzer, light, wig-wag flag)

What to check: Must activate before air pressure drops below 55 psi (modernized) or 60 psi (2005 system); say the psi at which it came on.
