Engine compartment in the simulator

Every part of the Engine compartment zone, in the order of the inspection, with what to check and what to say to the examiner in English and in your language. Tap a part to see it on the truck.

Parts in this zone

  1. 1

    Hood (tilt hood) and latches

What to check: Open the hood to reach the engine compartment; not itself a scored item but required to show engine components. Hood latches secure.

  2. 2

Ground and underside of engine/transmission (leak check)

What to check: Look for puddles on the ground and dripping fluids on the underside of the engine and transmission.

  3. 3

    Engine oil dipstick

What to check: Indicate where the dipstick is, pull it, wipe, reinsert and read; oil level must be between the ADD and FULL marks (above the refill mark).

  4. 4

    Coolant reservoir / sight glass

What to check: Coolant level is between the add and full (cold/hot) marks in the reservoir sight glass; reservoir and hoses secure and not leaking. Do not remove the radiator cap if the engine is hot.

  5. 5

    Radiator cap

What to check: 2005-system alternative: if the engine is not hot, remove the radiator cap and check for a visible coolant level.

  6. 6

Power steering fluid reservoir / dipstick

What to check: Indicate where the power steering dipstick or sight glass is; level must be between add and full (above the refill mark); reservoir secure and not leaking.

  7. 7

    Windshield washer fluid reservoir

What to check: Show that washer fluid is present; washers are then demonstrated from the cab.

  8. 8

Engine hoses (coolant, heater, air lines)

What to check: Hoses are not cracked, worn, soft or leaking and clamps are secure; air lines (if present) are in good condition with no leaks.

  9. 9

    Power steering pump and belt

What to check: Pump securely mounted and not leaking; if belt driven, belt is snug (no more than 1/2 to 3/4 inch play at the center), not cracked or frayed; if gear driven, say so.

  10. 10

    Water pump and belt

What to check: Water pump (follow the lower radiator hose) securely mounted, not leaking; belt snug with 1/2 to 3/4 inch play, no cracks or frays, or gear driven.

  11. 11

    Alternator and belt

What to check: Alternator securely mounted, not damaged, wires secure; belt snug with 1/2 to 3/4 inch play, no cracks or frays, or gear driven.

  12. 12

    Air compressor and belt

What to check: Air compressor securely mounted, not leaking, no audible air leaks; belt snug with 1/2 to 3/4 inch play, no cracks or frays, or gear driven.

  13. 13

Steering shaft / column (under hood)

What to check: Steering shaft not cracked or broken, securely mounted, no excessive play; U-joints secure.
